Naxos (in Greek Νάξος) is the largest of the Cyclades islands and is separated from Paros by a channel only 5 kilometers wide. It can be reached by sea or by air (Naxos National Airport). The island is 103 nautical miles from Piraeus, 87 from Rafina, and is connected to many other Cyclades islands as well as to more distant islands such as Crete and Astypalea.

It has an area of 448 km² and about 18,000 inhabitants.

The island is predominantly mountainous, with Mount Zas as the highest peak (1004 meters) both of the island and of the entire Cyclades archipelago. The eastern coast has two mountain ranges behind it that descend steeply to the sea, while the western coast is more gently sloping and rich in beaches. Unlike all the other Cyclades, it is rich in water, and the valleys that wedge between the mountains are fertile. On the island, a bit of everything is cultivated, especially vegetables, pistachios, peaches, melons, oranges, grapes, olives, and excellent potatoes. Moreover, livestock farming (with the production of many types of cheese) and beekeeping are always active. The island's subsoil is also rich: there are emery quarries and marble deposits. Since ancient times, Naxos' main characteristic has been its self-sufficiency. In the field of craftsmanship, weaving, embroidery, the production of a typical citron-based liqueur, and excellent jams stand out.

The capital of the island is Naxos, more commonly called Chora, with the main port.

The inhabitants of Naxos are envied as singers, musicians, and dancers because they are very skilled.

The clear sea of the island is, as with all the Cyclades, exposed to the winds, but there are also sheltered and beautiful beaches.

The island's road network is quite good and develops mainly in the central and northern parts. All the villages are connected by local buses. There are several car and scooter rental agencies on the island and taxi services.
