Cyclades

What can be said about the Cyclades that hasn't already been said? Known worldwide for the wonderful blue sea that embraces them, for the dazzling white villages, for the endless small churches with round domes, for the blue details of the flowered houses, for the characteristic windmills, and for the beautiful beaches.
The Cyclades are numerous and range from the very well-known to the small, tranquil, and wild ones. There are volcanic islands, others rich in history, masterpieces of art, and mythological legends, and others still, worldly and frequented particularly by young people. It is almost impossible to be disappointed. Being very varied, you can move from one to another in search of always different emotions.
We have reviewed 25 of them, that is, the 24 inhabited ones plus Delos, deserted but the hub of the archipelago. It is believed, in fact, that the name Cyclades (which in Greek means "circle") derives precisely from the circular arrangement of the various islands around Delos, the most important of all as it is sacred to the god Apollo.

Map of the Cyclades Islands

Where are the Cyclades Islands? Just take a look at the map of Greece to realize how central they are. Located right in the middle of the Aegean Sea, with the island of Delos at their epicenter, they are also very numerous. There are more than 200, but only 24 are inhabited.
From a glance at the map, we can imagine that their position also favored the rise of ancient civilizations. The islands were indeed inhabited as early as the remote Neolithic period.

Once you locate where these famous and beautiful islands are, all that remains is to choose the one that attracts us the most (or perhaps one we haven't visited yet). For younger or more dynamic tourists, it is possible to see more than one on the same holiday.
The Cyclades islands can be grouped based on their geographical location into “sub-archipelagos” as follows:
- Northern Cyclades (Andros, Kea, Tinos, Kythnos, Syros, Mykonos, Delos)
- Central Cyclades (Serifos, Sifnos, Antiparos, Paros, Naxos)
- Southern Cyclades (Milos, Kimolos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Ios, Amorgos, Santorini, Anafi)
- Small Cyclades (Iraklia, Schinoussa, Donoussa, Koufonissi, Keros)
Some islands, such as Andros, Kea, and Serifos, being relatively close to Athens, can be chosen in combination with a visit to the capital.
Cyclades Islands: Which One to Choose?
If you know the Cyclades by their reputation but have never been there, choosing where to go the first time can be challenging. Besides being numerous, they are truly beautiful and very different from each other.
So, which one to choose? Let's try to give some guidance by selecting five.
Milos
A fascinating Cyclades island inhabited since ancient times, offers various attractions: archaeological remains, incredible and varied nature, characteristic fishing villages, and a beautiful coastline. The sea is colorful and transparent, and thanks to the volcanic formation of the island, the cliffs vary from the most incredible white to a multitude of colors found also in the beautiful pebbles of some beaches.
Mykonos
If you are young or simply eager for fun and new friendships, the island of Mykonos is a guarantee of animation. Very crowded in high season, experienced both day and night, it offers a beautiful colorful sea, lovely sandy beaches, characteristic villages, and scenic windmills. Do not overlook the proximity to the island of Delos and its archaeological wonders to visit with a day boat trip.
Naxos
Naxos also offers various attractions: beautiful beaches, crystal clear sea, lovely white villages both by the sea and immersed in greenery, animation, but also the possibility to isolate oneself as it is very large. A complete island suitable for all needs. Being large, it is advisable to have a means of transport, although the bus line on the island connects all the main places and beaches.
Santorini
Together with Mykonos, perhaps the most famous island of the Cyclades and not without reason! Its volcanic origin has made it truly fascinating: magical sunsets, volcanic sand beaches with incredible colors, beautiful white villages perched on the caldera with deep blue waters, and beautiful archaeological sites. Often a honeymoon destination and quite crowded in high season, it always offers all the charm of the most romantic but also the wildest Greece.
Koufonissi
For a holiday focused on a beautiful blue sea with fine white sandy beaches, in a characteristic and relaxing context, even if rather crowded in high season. The islet can be explored on foot and also offers the charm of beautiful cliffs and the possibility to reach by boat the deserted island of Kato Koufonissi with its high cliffs and crystal-clear sea.
How to Reach the Cyclades Islands?
Some Cyclades are easily reachable by direct flight from many European cities, for others the journey might be a bit longer but the destination will still be worth any additional effort. Here are the main ways to reach them:
Flight
Directly by plane to the islands with an international airport. In high season, many direct flights operate from cities across Europe. For the list of Greek islands with an airport, you can consult this article.
International Flight + Domestic Flight
By plane to Athens (Elefthérios Venizélos International Airport) and then, always by plane (maximum 100 seats), with a short domestic flight.
Flight + Ferry
By plane to Athens (Elefthérios Venizélos International Airport) and then by ferry from the port of Piraeus, which is about 45km away. The Cyclades islands reachable by sea from the port of Piraeus (almost all) are listed in this article where the approximate travel time is also specified.
Directions for reaching Piraeus from the airport are instead present in this article on our blog.
Only 5 Cyclades islands are not directly reachable from Piraeus and they are: Andros (reachable from the port of Rafina), Antiparos (reachable from Paros), Delos (reachable from Mykonos), Kea (reachable from the port of Lavrio), and Keros (reachable from Koufonissi).
Car + Ferry
By car (or other own vehicle such as motorbike or camper) to the departure port. Travellers from Western Europe can take a ferry from Adriatic ports (such as Venice, Ancona, Bari, or Brindisi in Italy) to Igoumenitsa or Patras, then drive to the port of Piraeus. Those driving from Northern or Eastern Europe can reach Greece via the Balkans. From the mainland, drive to Piraeus (for almost all the Cyclades), Rafina (for Andros), or Lavrio (for Kea), then by ferry to the destination.
Where to Stay in the Cyclades Islands?
After choosing the Cyclades island for our holidays, we need to decide where to stay. Accommodation options vary from magnificent resorts to simple campsites, including hotels and accommodations of all categories, tourist villages, and especially studios, typical of Greek hospitality.
Hotels and Studios
Regarding hotels and accommodations of all categories, they are practically present on all the islands. The most characteristic accommodations remain the studios. These are small accommodations (studio or one-bedroom apartments) with typical Cycladic architecture: very white walls, blue fixtures, bursts of bougainvillea, and perhaps some cats looking for cuddles or food.
They are generally economical and family-run, furnished simply but functionally and pleasantly. They always have a kitchenette, which can be very useful if you miss a plate of pasta! You can book a studio directly on Booking.com.
Some studio stays also include breakfast and if the hosts have a garden, you are often supplied with their fruit and vegetables. It's not uncommon to make friends with the hosts, usually friendly and helpful, as well as with neighboring guests, thanks to the friendly atmosphere that easily develops.

Campsites
If you are looking for a campsite, the options are on these islands: Amorgos, Andros, Antiparos, Folegandros, Ios, Kea, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Syros, and Tinos.
It should be noted that in Greece wild camping is prohibited, but on some islands, it is tolerated as long as it is done with respect for the environment and people.
Luxury Hotels
For luxury accommodation, i.e., resorts offering all comforts along with excellent entertainment and sports facilities, the best-equipped islands are Mykonos and Santorini.
The Most Beautiful Cyclades Islands According to Us
As previously mentioned, the Cyclades islands that we recommend as a first choice are: Koufonissi, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini.
We consider them the most beautiful from a landscape point of view, but others can also be added: Ios (for young people), Paros (for families), Folegandros (for its beautiful Chora), Kimolos (for its sea), Amorgos (for the romantic atmosphere), and Delos (UNESCO heritage for its archaeology).
Giving advice on where to go and what to see in the Cyclades archipelago is not easy. Depending on your needs and expectations, you might prefer one island over another.
The choice can be determined by the sea, the beaches, entertainment, nature, climate, sports, the search for tranquility, cuisine, costs, accessibility, and much more. Since the Cyclades offer very varied solutions, we can say that among the islands of this archipelago, there is definitely one that suits us.
Returning to our five favorites, let’s see what to absolutely see or do once you arrive on the island.
Milos
Visit the traditional “syrmata” (old shelters for fishermen's boats), the catacombs (an important early Christian monument), tour the island by boat, and especially walk on the colorful or dazzling white cliffs and beaches.
Mykonos
Boat trip to Delos, beach life with a beautiful sea, and most importantly, fun, fun, fun.
Naxos
Beach life with fine sand and crystal-clear sea, trips inland to discover beautiful characteristic villages, and evenings among the white alleys of the Chora.
Santorini
Walks through fascinating panoramic villages (especially at sunset), visit the caldera and the peculiar volcanic beaches.
Koufonissi
Walk along the coast to the Caribbean-like beach of Pori and take a boat trip to the nearby island of Kato Koufonissi.
Cyclades Islands with Airports
The Cyclades islands reachable directly by plane from Italy, as they have an international airport, are Mykonos and Santorini. In high season, however, there may also be direct charter flights to these and other islands of the archipelago.
Regarding Mykonos, its airport is the Mykonos International Airport located 4km from the capital. Generally, it is directly reachable from the Italian airports of Rome (Fiumicino), Milan (Malpensa), Naples (Capodichino), Venice (Marco Polo), Bologna (Guglielmo Marconi), Bari (Karol Wojtyla), Florence (Peretola), Genoa (Cristoforo Colombo), and Verona (Valerio Catullo).
As for Santorini, its airport is the Santorini International Airport, located 7km from the capital Thira. It is usually directly reachable from the Italian airports of Rome (Fiumicino), Milan (Malpensa), Naples (Capodichino), Venice (Marco Polo), Bologna (Guglielmo Marconi), Bari (Karol Wojtyla), Florence (Peretola), Palermo (Punta Raisi), Genoa (Cristoforo Colombo), and Verona (Valerio Catullo).
The Cyclades islands that only have a domestic airport, and therefore can only be reached by flight with a plane change at Athens International Airport (Elefthérios Venizélos), are:
- Milos (Milos National Airport – MLO, 5km from the port of Adamas)
- Naxos (Naxos National Airport – JNX, 1km from the capital)
- Paros (Paros National Airport – PAR, 8km from the capital)
- Syros (Syros National Airport – JSY, 2km from the capital)
The domestic flight is short, but the planes have a maximum capacity of about 100 seats.
There are also domestic flights between the various islands, so it is possible to reach Crete or one of the Cyclades with an international airport and then continue with a domestic flight.
Climate, Weather, and Temperatures in the Cyclades Islands
The climate in the Cyclades Islands is typically Mediterranean: winters are quite humid but not particularly cold, while summers are dry, hot, and sunny. Both air and sea temperatures do not experience significant fluctuations and remain within very acceptable values.
Meltemi
The most typical and well-known weather feature of these islands is the presence in summer of a particular wind called “Meltemi”. It is a monsoon-type, cool and moderate, coming from the North/Northwest. You can encounter “Meltemi days” from late spring until early autumn.
Its presence is not to be despised as it keeps the skies clear and makes the summer heat, which rarely exceeds 30°, more bearable. On the downside, it stirs the sea, cools it a bit, and sometimes annoys on sandy beaches.
Don't worry... on all the islands there is always a sheltered side to move to if you don't want to take advantage of the wind maybe to have fun with some windsurfing or kitesurfing.
Clothing
In the Cyclades, people usually go in summer, from June to September, with light clothing in the suitcase but also a sweatshirt or sweater for windy evenings.

Cyclades Islands Suitable for Families with Children
Saying whether an island is suitable for families with children, or rather recommending a specific one, is not easy. Usually, it is believed that a place is suitable for a family vacation with young children when it offers easy connectivity, a pleasant natural environment but without dangers, appropriate entertainment and sports, curiosities or characteristic places to visit.
For the more anxious parents, or those with children a bit frail, the presence of a medical clinic, if not a hospital, can also be a source of relaxation.
Regarding accommodation and dining, there should never be any problems: the food is not spicy or particularly “exotic” and the Cyclades accommodation facilities are clean and functional.
Obviously, for families with children who adapt to everything, and whose parents love to let them experience everything, every island can become an excellent place for adventurous family vacations!
To narrow down the choice a bit, we have selected some islands where perhaps not all the required characteristics coexist but which will surely be appreciated by both children and parents for their beauty, sense of freedom, and opportunity for relaxation.
Naxos
In Naxos, families can find everything they are looking for: shallow sea, sandy beaches, entertainment and water activities, beautiful villages to explore, archaeological curiosities, the airport (even if only for domestic flights), and, if necessary, also the hospital. Being quite large, it is suitable for families who love to give their children different experiences: from beach life to mountain walks, from boat trips to visits to museums or archaeological sites, from explorations among the white alleys of the villages in search of old mines.
Paros
On this island too, the beaches are sandy, the sea is shallow and transparent, there is good entertainment even for children, a small hospital, and the airport for domestic flights. It is a well-equipped island for tourism and offers the possibility of relaxing but also fun family holidays. In particular, if visited in September, children will appreciate a visit to the "Butterfly Garden" where at that time many migrating butterflies appear on the trees.
Serifos and Sifnos
Serifos and Sifnos, close to each other, can be chosen as a pair. On these islands, you can walk inland among very beautiful panoramic villages, perhaps in search of windmills or abandoned mines. Both are still little frequented and therefore suitable for a quiet holiday with children where the sea is very beautiful and sandy beaches are not lacking. Unfortunately, they are only reachable by sea.
Syros
It is recommended for those who prefer the fastest possible journey, as it has an international airport. Its capital, Ermoupolis, is very beautiful and lively in the evening. The sea is suitable for children as it is shallow and sandy.
Koufonissi
Its strengths for a family with children are a beautiful shallow sea with sandy beaches and the almost total absence of traffic. Unfortunately, it is not immediately reachable (although the journey on the legendary “Skopelitis” ferry is very fascinating) and the entertainment has to be “invented” within the family!

Cyclades Islands for Those Seeking Fun and Nightlife
If the word vacation is associated with a certain type of fun, namely spending nights sweating in discos full of cheerful people, the Cyclades Islands have much to offer, and age doesn't matter when it comes to having fun; what counts is the spirit and the desire to break the routine a bit.
Of course, in addition to disco life, you can have fun at a beach party, practicing water sports, visiting amusement parks, or simply chatting and joking around a table with new friends (maybe improvising a bit in foreign languages).
In the Cyclades Islands, entertainment, which is never chaotic, is particularly present in Ios, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, and Santorini.
Ios
Very popular especially among young people from all over the world, Ios is mostly about music. In summer, many parties animate the nights in Mylopotas and particularly in Chora. On the island, there are several discos and nightclubs where you can make new friends and, of course, have a great time, sometimes even going a bit overboard.
Mykonos
Definitely the island synonymous with fun not only in the Cyclades but throughout Greece. Well-known are the two beaches of Paradise and Super Paradise which become super party places in the evening! But even in Chora, there are plenty of clubs and evening and nightlife entertainment. Whether it's “healthy” fun or “transgressive” fun, the island offers everything. The presence of famous discos and nightclubs attracts many young people from all over the world every year, who will return home perhaps not very tanned and tired but with a smile on their faces.
Naxos
In Naxos, the whole family can have fun: children, teenagers, and adults. The island offers games for children, opportunities to practice all kinds of sports, and finally music entertainment both in disco bars and in discos. Additionally, Chora is very lively in the evening.
Paros
In Paros, nightlife comes alive particularly in Naoussa (more refined) and Parikia (more popular) where there are many discos and nightclubs for all tastes!
Santorini
After visiting the caldera and taking sunset photos in the beautiful white villages, nightlife also explodes in Santorini. The entertainment is mainly in Thira where there are several discos, but there are also many beach parties with music, especially in Perivolos, Perissa, and on the Black Beach where young people from all over the world gather.
Cheapest Cyclades Islands for Those Looking to Save Money
If one of your desires has always been a vacation in Greece on a Cycladic island but your budget seemed inadequate for the destination, you can reconsider. In the archipelago, there are some costly islands, like Mykonos and Santorini, but there are also cheaper islands where you can spend a wonderful vacation without spending a lot.
The cost of the trip is certainly an important item and to evaluate this expense it is necessary to analyze different items:
- travel by motorbike, car, camper, or bus
- ferries with or without a vehicle
- international and/or domestic flight
- rental of a vehicle on the island
- accommodation
- etc...
The following articles cover the topic and specific references to the Cyclades can be found:
- Ships and Ferries to the Greek Islands
- Greek Islands Reachable from Athens by Air or from Piraeus by Ship

As for accommodation, tent and sleeping bag aside, the most economical solution is always the choice of one of the many “studios” present on all the islands. They are small apartments equipped with a kitchenette and usually run at a family level.
Assuming that with a bit of research and adaptability, every island also offers “low cost” solutions, below we list those we consider the most economical:
Anafi
For those who love tranquility and relaxation, it offers a picturesque capital, beautiful monasteries, archaeological remains, a stalactite cave and, why not, the possibility of a boat trip to nearby Santorini.
Andros
For those who love discovering beautiful villages and monasteries, combining beach life with mountain walks.
Iraklia
Located in the Small Cyclades archipelago, it is for lovers of solitude, walks, and unspoiled nature. It is still little frequented but has beautiful white sandy beaches and a crystal clear sea.
Naxos
The island is very large and has many studios, so there are accommodations for all “pockets.” If you don't want to rent a means of transport, Naxos has a good local bus network. Suitable for all types of tourism, it offers beautiful sandy beaches, clear sea, beautiful villages, and lots of greenery.
Serifos
A still quiet island, suitable for those who love to walk and bask in the sun on beautiful sandy beaches. The panoramic white capital is also very beautiful.
Less Touristic and Quieter Cyclades Islands
The Cyclades archipelago is perhaps the most famous in Greece and consequently its islands are touristic, but not all of them. There are indeed several opportunities to spend a relaxing holiday choosing among the quieter and less touristic islands of the archipelago. Generally, these islands are a bit more difficult to reach, but the peace, atmosphere, and absence of noisy tourist crowds compensate for any travel discomfort or the more limited service offering.
So let's see some brief suggestions for deciding which Cyclades island, among the less touristic ones, to spend our serene and relaxing holiday on.
- Amorgos for those who want to breathe as much Greek atmosphere as possible, walk in the mountains, on beautiful cliffs, on the beach, or face the sea on a windsurf.
- Anafi for walking, boating around the island, and appreciating the highly felt local traditions.
- Andros for those who appreciate large islands (where there is room for everyone), greenery, and plenty of water.
- Antiparos for those looking for beaches that tolerate nudism and beautiful sea.
- Donoussa for those who love small islands, all to be discovered on foot.
- Folegandros for those who love the beautiful white villages of the Cyclades.
- Iraklia, like all the islets of the Small Cyclades, is for those who love to reach every corner on foot.
- Kea for those who love to immerse themselves in popular culture and listen to typical Greek songs.
- Kimolos for those who love nature and its animals.
- Kytnos for spa enthusiasts and for an eco-sustainable vacation.
- Koufonissi for those who love islands so small that they can be visited on foot and a very beautiful sea.
- Schinoussa for those who love to walk in the absolute tranquility of a very small island.
- Serifos for those who love isolated and unspoiled bays.
- Sifnos for those who love good food.
- Sikinos for those who love cliffs overlooking the sea.
- Syros for those who love slightly wild environments, occasionally a bit of classical music, and the possibility of attending Catholic religious functions.
- Tinos to immerse yourself in Greek religiosity.

Less Windy Cyclades Islands
If there are less windy islands in Greece, they certainly are not found in the Cyclades archipelago, renowned for the summer presence of the Meltemi. This wind is not always to be despised as it can mitigate certain otherwise very hot summer days.
However, for those who can't stand its presence, let's list the less windy islands or areas of the archipelago. Always keep in mind that, since the Meltemi blows from the North/Northeast, the bays located to the South/Southwest of the island can be sheltered, especially if they have hills behind them.
Ios
The least windy beach is the one at the foot of Chora: Milopotas.
Kea
The most sheltered beaches on the island are: Yialiskari, Kambi, and Koundouros.
Kimolos
The most protected beaches from the wind are those in the south of the island.
Kythnos
The most sheltered beaches on the island are: Episkopi, Loutra, and Lefkes.
Milos
The most sheltered beaches on the island, when the Meltemi blows, are those on the southern coast and those inside the bay. The northern beaches are very exposed.
Santorini
The sheltered beaches from the wind are located in the south of the island. In particular, the notable ones are: Kokkini Paralia (Red Beach), White Beach, and Vlychada.
Serifos
On this island, the most sheltered beaches are also in the south, particularly: Livadhakia, Koutalas, and Megalo Livadi.
Sifnos
There are several sheltered beaches in Sifnos: Vroulidia, Seralia, Faros, Glyfo, Platys Gialos, and Vathi.
Syros
In Syros, you can frequent more beaches to find shelter from the wind, such as: Azolimnos, Ahladi, Vari, Megas Gialos, Phoinikas, and Delfini.
Windiest Cyclades Islands for Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Enthusiasts
Not everyone dislikes the Meltemi that often blows in the summer in the Cyclades archipelago. For kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts, it is a blessing.
Let's see which islands are most suitable for practicing these sports safely.
Antiparos
These sports are particularly practiced at the beaches of Psaraliki and Glifa.
Andros
In Andros, the notable beaches are Kypri and Mylos.
Folegandros
A particularly windy island, it attracts surfers mainly to the beaches of Karavostassis and Angali.
Mykonos
In Mykonos, surfing is especially fun at Ftelia, Myrsini, and Kalafatis.
Naxos
A highly appreciated island for these sports, which are mainly practiced at Mikri Vigla, Glyfada, Pirgaki, Chora, and Agia Anna.
Paros
An island hosting international kitesurfing and windsurfing competitions, practiced at Golden Beach, New Golden Beach, Pounta, Tsoukalia, Parikia, Chrisi Akti, Nea Chrisi Akti, and Santa Maria.
Santorini
These sports (for experts) are mainly practiced at Kamari.
Tinos
Tinos is also typically a suitable destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
