Kea (from the Greek Κέα) is the Cyclades island closest to the mainland. The locals call it Tzià, and it can only be reached by sea, from Lavrio (just 17 nautical miles away) and from other Cyclades islands such as Kythnos, Andros, Syros, and Tinos.

It has an area of 121 km² and about 2,500 inhabitants.

The island is predominantly hilly but also features some plains, valleys, and very fertile plateaus. Its highest mountain is called Profitis Ilias (568 meters). Along the coasts, the island's vegetation is practically absent, while inland there are mostly oak trees. The most frequented beaches are on the west coast, both to the south and north.

The inhabitants cultivate orchards (excellent apricots, almonds, lemons, and grapes) and mainly engage in livestock farming: pigs, goats, sheep, and cows. Once there were tanneries on the island, but now, albeit slowly, a bit of tourism is developing.

The capital of Kea is Ioulis, located inland, about 5 km from the main port in Korissia.

Kea is not a glamorous island; it has beautiful clear waters and lovely beaches, but it is primarily a truly Greek island where one can enjoy tranquility, the beauty of typical Greek landscapes dotted with white chapels, good cuisine, and a genuine atmosphere. Being the Cyclades island closest to the mainland, it fills up with Athenians during weekends.

Song and dance are still very much alive in the popular culture of Kea.

The island's road network is efficient, but the eastern part is certainly less accessible than the western part; the main villages and the most renowned beaches are all connected by local buses. There are car and scooter rental services on the island, as well as a taxi service.
