Among the attractions of Kea is its ancient history. It was a prosperous island because it was at the center of transit trade and included four highly developed cities: Ioulis, Karthea, Pilessa, and Korissia. One of the unique features of this island is the presence of countless stone walls that separate the various land properties and support the soil on the slopes.
Here is a list of the main things to see in Kea.
Ioulis
A typical Cycladic village made up of white houses and narrow paved streets. The castle, in a very panoramic position, and the archaeological museum are also beautiful.
Korissia
With the island's main port, Korissia is located above the ancient city of the same name, where some parts of walls and sanctuaries can still be seen.
Vurkari
A picturesque fishing village near Korissia that still retains its charm.
Archaeological Area of Aghia Irini
Located near Vourkari, the archaeological area contains an important prehistoric settlement from the Bronze Age.
Karthea
It was the most important of the four cities of ancient Kea. Now you can see its ruins with large walls, some temples, and the remains of the theater and aqueduct.
Tower of Aghia Marina
An important and imposing fortification located between Ioulis and Pisses. Originally, it was believed to be 100 meters high.
The Lion of Kea
A colossal prehistoric lion carved into the rock near Ioulis.
Madonna of Kastriani
It is a white monastery on top of a steep hill by the sea, consisting of two churches. In the older church, you can admire the miraculous icon of the Madonna. The place is very beautiful, immersed in the typical arid nature of the island.
Festival of Panaghia
On August 15, during this festival, the island comes alive with traditional costumes, music, and dancing.
