Kimolos (from Greek Κίμωλος), also known as Argentiera, is a small island of the Cyclades, very close to Milos. It can only be reached by sea, usually from Milos, which is only half a nautical mile away, but also from Piraeus (86 nautical miles) and other nearby islands.
It has an area of 36 km² and about 800 inhabitants.
Kimolos is mountainous, of volcanic origin, and its highest peak reaches 358 meters. Its climate is dry but still supports cultivation in some narrow valleys. The inhabitants are engaged in livestock farming, fishing, agriculture, perlite extraction, and a bit of tourism. In the past, the extraction of kaolin and gypsum was flourishing: the island indeed has a white appearance.
Its coasts are colorful, jagged, and include several beautiful sandy beaches.
The capital of the island is Kimolos (Chora) and its main port is in Psathi.
The sea around the island is very beautiful, clear, and colorful. The island is quiet, genuine, and simple. Rich in fauna, its sea is home to the monk seal, while on land various types of birds and reptiles nest.
The roads that cross the island are few and fairly good, but the island is small and can also be explored on foot. A bus connects the port with the capital, and there is a taxi service.
