What to see in Kastellorizo?

Castelorizo is an island that has seen a bit of tourism only recently, particularly after being the setting for Salvatores' Oscar-winning film "Mediterraneo." Although it does not have beaches, the island is worth a visit for its neoclassical architecture (it was a retreat for wealthy shipowners and diplomats), its beautiful sea, and a unique Greco-Turkish atmosphere (even today, minarets and churches coexist). Close to the bustling and lively Rhodes, Castelorizo offers solitude and relaxation. Here are the things to see and do on the island, besides relaxing and enjoying the landscape.

Castelorizo
A picturesque village of colorful houses arranged in an amphitheater shape along the inlet to the well-sheltered harbor. The entire population of the island is concentrated here, and it takes its name from the red castle of the Knights of St. John of Rhodes, of which only a few ruins remain. Visit the beautiful church of Aghios Kostantinos and Aghia Eleni.

Archaeological Museum
Located in a bastion of the castle, it contains ancient artifacts and folk art objects. A visit is essential to understand the history of this border island, which a hundred years ago welcomed many ships and was the second port of the Dodecanese.

Perasta or Fokiali (Blue Grotto)
Located southeast of the island, it takes 45 minutes by boat to reach and is a beautiful, large, and exciting sea cave frequented by monk seals and adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. It is among the most beautiful caves in all of Greece for its stunning reflections on the blue water of a truly crystal-clear sea.

Boat Trips
In summer, boats depart from the port of Mandraki for the islets of Ro, Strongili, and Agios Georgios, which offer beautiful beaches for swimming.

Excursion to Kas in Turkey
A beautiful 20-minute boat trip to the Turkish coast, where you can admire beautiful archaeological sites.

Festivals
There are several occasions for celebrations on the island. During the summer, concerts are organized, while the main religious festivals are during Holy Week of Easter, July 20 in honor of the prophet Elias, August 1 for the patron saint, and September 13 to commemorate the liberation of the island.
