You can choose to vacation on the island of Euboea to explore its diverse landscapes, taking advantage of its easy accessibility, and its large size, to find quiet and relaxing corners. There are also archaeological sites and beautiful sea. Here are the main things to see.
Halkida
The capital is located at the point where the island is closest to the mainland, on the Euripus Strait. In the old part of the city
, you can observe a mosque, a Turkish fountain, and the Aghia Paraskevi church, originally built in Byzantine style but later transformed into a Gothic cathedral (a very rare style in Greece). Additionally, you can visit the folklore museum, the municipal art gallery, and a medieval aqueduct. In the past, this city, whose name derives from the term “bronze,” was famous for the processing of this metal and the production of weapons, becoming a commercial power.
Archaeological Museum
It houses prehistoric vases, ancient ceramics, and sculptures.
Euripus Strait
A narrow strip of sea between the island and the mainland. Observe the curious phenomenon, possibly explained by lunar attraction, where the strong marine current changes direction from six to fourteen times a day, making the stretch of sea navigable only if you follow the current's direction. According to tradition, Aristotle committed suicide in this canal because he couldn't understand the secret of its currents. The bridge over the canal was first built in 441 BC.
Temple of Artemis
One of the most important archaeological discoveries of recent years, located near Amarynthos, east of Eretria.
Eretria
Archaeological excavations of ancient Eretria with a theater, houses, ancient baths, mosaics, and the temple of Apollo. The theater is famous for an underground machine that, when needed, would bring a mysterious god onto the stage, hence the saying “deus ex machina.” I recommend a walk to the small peninsula Nisi Oneiron near the port.
Distos
Ruins of ancient Distos transformed by the Venetians into a fortress.
Nea Stira
Beautiful tourist center within a sheltered bay with an islet in front. There are some prehistoric caves in the area.
Karistos
Charming town with wide beaches and the remains of a Venetian fortress. The area has cipollino marble quarries, widely used in ancient Rome. More easily reachable by sea than by land. From here, you can take a beautiful excursion to Mount Ohi (1398 meters) in about 3.5 hours.
Istiaia
Large town with a museum of stuffed animals and a folklore museum. The area is renowned for its excellent grapes.
Mount Dirfis
Reachable from Steni, a village immersed in greenery, it is a beautiful excursion also doable with mules or donkeys.
Aidipsos Thermal Station
Located in the north of the island with remains of the ancient baths where Augustus, Hadrian, and Sulla also went for treatments. It is the largest thermal location in Greece.
Amarintos
Visit the Byzantine churches of the Metamorphosis and the Dormition.
Limni
Picturesque location arranged in an amphitheater on the sea and surrounded by pines. In the area, visit the Moni Glataki monastery with interesting frescoes.
Kymi
Embarkation port for the Sporades, it is a town clinging to the mountain with a beautiful view of the island of Skyros. There are neoclassical houses, a folklore museum, a thermal spring, and especially the Monastery of the Metamorphosis of Tou Sotiros with a medieval fortress behind it.
Female Monasteries
Three female monasteries: Panaghia Makrymallis, Aghios Ioannis Kalyvitos, and especially Panaghia Perivleptos, which preserves rare frescoes from the Turkish domination.
Aghios Ioannis Rosos
Near Prokopi, it is a beautiful church with the relics of the saint to whom it is dedicated.
Moni Lefkon
Located in a beautiful area rich in poplars, it is one of the oldest monasteries on the island.
Dragon Houses
Located near Stira, these are Cyclopean rocks that take on strange shapes.
Monumental Plane Tree
Near Mantoudi, you can admire a gigantic plane tree with a diameter of 27 meters.
Profitis Ilias Cave
Beautiful cave with numerous stalactites near Aidipsos.
Marble Bull
A statue recovered from the sea, now located in the port of Orei.
Panoramas
Both the roads that cross the island and the places overlooking the western coast offer beautiful views of the sea, the island, or the mainland. Particularly the area between Halkida, Eretria, Nea Psara, Aliverion, and Lepoura.
Boat Trips
Pleasant sea excursions to the various islets surrounding Euboea, especially the Petali island to the south.
