The biggest attraction of the island of Syros is undoubtedly its capital, which is spectacular, especially when seen from the sea. However, the island also offers beautiful characteristic villages, sandy beaches, and quiet coves among the rocks. For those who love nightlife, there are several opportunities for entertainment with dancing and music: the island comes alive in the evening. Below are the main attractions.
Ermoupolis
It is the capital of the island, beautiful to see from the sea, with all white houses spread over two hills and with beautiful neoclassical buildings and villas with gardens that were the homes of wealthy shipowners. The two hills, practically twins, are Anos Syros (Catholic and medieval) and Vrondado (Orthodox and modern) with the large and beautiful church of Aghios Nikolaos at the top. Very beautiful is the lively Miaouli Square, paved with marble and well lit in the evening, where the neoclassical town hall overlooks. Also worth seeing is the elegant Vaporia district where the 19th-century villas of the shipowners are located. Finally, if you want to climb up to the church of Aghios Dimitros, you can enjoy a stunning view towards the island of Tinos. For those who are not discouraged by the effort, perhaps under the sun, I recommend climbing to Anos Syros (about 800 steps) for the view and the beautiful village full of small white houses among alleys and stairs. A nice walk is also along the seafront, frequented at all hours.
Archaeological Museum
It contains prehistoric artifacts with ceramics and sculptures.
Kastri
A fortified settlement from 2,300-2,220 B.C.
Chalandriani
A vast necropolis with about 600 tombs from the Copper Age.
Vari
A seaside fishing village located in a beautiful bay to the south of the island.
Kini
A very picturesque fishing port with beautiful transparent sea. It is located halfway along the western coast of the island.
Tour of the island by boat
It is worth taking a boat tour of the island to reach the beautiful beaches that are accessible only by sea, particularly Cape Grammata where there are inscriptions left by sailors over the centuries on the marble walls. Generally, one can depart from the port of Ermoupolis or from Kini.
Aegean Festival
An important festival held at the Apollo Theater in Ermoupolis in July, featuring a program of opera and concerts.
