Othoni (from the Greek Οθωνοί), also known as Fanò, is a small Ionian island (Otranto Channel) belonging to the Diapontia archipelago, located northwest of Corfu (12 nautical miles). It is the westernmost Ionian island and the closest to the Italian coast (43 nautical miles), while it is 38 miles from Albania. It is easily reachable from nearby Corfu.
It has an area of 10 km² and about 700 inhabitants, though most leave the island in winter.
Othoni is very green (cypresses and olive trees), mountainous, with unspoiled nature. Its highest mountain (Megalo Merovigli) is almost 400 meters high. The island offers beautiful sandy beaches and a truly crystal-clear and colorful sea.
Othoni, while generally tranquil, is very popular during the high season with tourists on day trips or sailing, especially Italians.
According to mythology, Othoni is home to the cave where Calypso held Odysseus as her "enchanted prisoner" for seven years.
The capital is Ammos, where the main port is also located.
Othoni has a few roads (only one paved) leading to the main locations, but motor traffic on the island is almost nonexistent. In particular, the road that climbs towards the characteristic village of Chorio is steep and winding. There are no buses or taxis, but the island's interior is small enough to be explored by scooter (rented in Corfu) or on foot.
