Othoni is recommended for a visit, even just for a day, for those who love tranquility, crystal-clear sea, and lush nature for walking. It is definitely an island much loved by sailors for its beautiful sheltered coves and rich seabeds. Here are the things to see or do on the island.
Ammos
The capital of the island and the starting point for land excursions. The village has a white sandy beach and consists of a few colorful houses and two small ports.
Croce
Starting from Ammos, you reach it by climbing the Kalodiki hill. It was placed in memory of those who fell in battles against pirates led by the famous Barbarossa.
Horio
A characteristic village composed of a few old traditional houses located in the highest area of the island. It can also be reached on foot with at least two hours of walking from the port (about 9 kilometers). In the village, you can see some old olive mills, a panoramic little church, and enjoy a beautiful sunset view from the Iliovasilema cliff.
Calypso Cave
A beautiful cave with a very blue sea and the charm of being, according to mythology, the place where Odysseus spent seven years enchanted by the nymph Calypso. The waves breaking inside the cave are said to produce "melodious" sounds. It can only be reached by sea (20 minutes from the port).
Castle
Located at the easternmost point of the island, it was a Venetian castle, of which only a few ruins remain.
Lighthouse
Located northeast of the island, near the ruins of the Venetian castle, it is one of the most powerful lighthouses in Greece.
Walks
One of the things worth doing on the island is definitely the walks on the numerous old paths that, through the Mediterranean scrub, lead to scenic spots, old villages, or quiet coves. Perhaps the most challenging but certainly also the most scenic walk leads to the highest point of the island: Mount Megalo Merovigli (394 meters).
Panaghia Festival
Held in August in honor of the Virgin Mary, it features music, dancing, and roast lamb.
