Gyali (from Greek Γυαλί) is a small island in the Dodecanese located just south of Kos (10 km) and near Nisyros (2 nautical miles). It can only be reached by sea with a day trip or a private boat (a permit from the mining agency operating on the island is required).
It has an area of 4.5 km² and a population of about 20 inhabitants.
The island is rather arid (only low Mediterranean scrub) and of volcanic origin. Its appearance is made unique and suggestive by the presence of a huge pumice quarry in the eastern area. In the west, obsidian and pyrite are extracted. In the central, narrow, and flat area, there is a beautiful sandy beach. The highest point measures about 180 meters.
The inhabitants of the island are mostly workers from the large pumice quarry.
The only village on the island is Chora, where the port is also located.
The island's road network is functional for the extraction quarries.
