Kalymnos is an island that attracts fishermen and divers for its crystal-clear sea, as well as mountain enthusiasts. The island offers numerous climbing routes (of all difficulties), most notably along steep cave walls with stalactites. Kalymnos does not receive hordes of tourists because there are few ancient sites to see and limited entertainment, but nature offers beautiful landscapes and very clear sea. Here are the main things to see and do on the island.
Pothia
The charming capital is arranged amphitheatrically around the lively and picturesque port, characterized by many colorful houses tightly packed together and rich in flowers. When Pothia came under Italian rule in 1912, the inhabitants protested by painting all the houses white and blue, the colors of the Greek flag. In the town, there is an archaeological museum housed in a beautiful neoclassical building. Also worth seeing are the large church Christos Sotiros built by the sea, the sponge warehouses, and nearby the beautiful castle of Chrysocherià.
Chorio
The old capital of the island where you can admire the ruins of the medieval castle and an ancient church from the 6th century AD (Christos tou Jerousalem), as well as two monasteries.
Sea Museum
Located in Vlihadia, it is interesting for the private collection of a sponge fisherman, including sponges, shells, corals, and ancient boat remains.
Vathi Fjord
A deep and fascinating fjord with steep rocky walls and a stunning, calm, crystal-clear sea. A small harbor at the end and a fertile valley rich in mandarin trees complete the scene.
Caves
The island has several beautiful caves. The main ones are Kefala Cave (with stalactites and stalagmites, accessible both by sea and by land), the Cave of the Seven Virgins (or Nymphs Cave), and
Skalia Cave, which is difficult to access.
Thermal Baths
Located about 1 km from the capital, these baths feature radium-rich water. They offer modern facilities and accommodation options.
Mirties
A beautiful, lush, and well-maintained village with a small harbor. Opposite, separated by a narrow strip of sea, is the islet of Telendos.
Masuri
A lovely village with a beautiful sandy beach.
Climbing
The island has about 50 climbing crags equipped with more than 1,000 routes of all difficulties, often with fantastic views.
Boat Trips
From Kalymnos, you can take day trips by boat to the nearby beautiful islets of Telendos and Pserimos.
Carnival
In Chorio, there is a reenactment of the old lively Kalymnos with dancing and singing.
Easter
Celebrated with events that commemorate the courage of the sponge fishermen and fireworks.
Feast of Aghios Panteleimonas
Held on July 27, this festival features singing and dancing in honor of the saint.
