What to see in Kassos?

Kassos is a little-known, tranquil, and authentic island. It is ideal for vacationers who love walking, for example, to discover ruined windmills in a pristine and somewhat wild nature; all in an arid environment typical of southern Greece. The activities you can do on the island, besides enjoying the natural landscapes, are listed below.

Fri
The capital is entirely made up of stone houses. Notable sights include the archaeological and ethnographic collection and the historic windmill painted with the Greek flag and the inscription 1824, marking the date of the massacre of the islanders by the Ottoman army.

Emborio
An ancient commercial port with beautiful, square stone houses that belonged to past shipowners. Be sure to visit the large early Christian church of Panagia.

Aghia Marina
An interesting village situated on a hill with beautiful churches, a restored windmill, traditional houses, and the ruins of a fortress.

Panagia
A picturesque village with the beautiful church of Panagia tou Giorgi, the oldest on the island. You can also admire the characteristic six white chapels built in a row. This village was once home to wealthy shipowners and captains.

Arvanitochori
A picturesque village almost in the center of the island.

Poli
The ancient capital, now a beautiful village with the ruins of the old Venetian castle and the lovely church of Aghia Triada.

Monastery of Aghios Mamas
Located near Poli, it is a beautiful white monastery rich in mosaics and icons. The place and the road to reach it are very scenic, both on the island and over the sea.

Sellai Cave
Located near Aghia Marina, it is a beautiful cave with stalactites and stalagmites.

Ellinokamara Cave
A cave surrounded by Cyclopean walls and interesting because it was the refuge of the islanders during pirate attacks.

Armathia Islet
A boat trip to spend a few hours on the beautiful sandy beach of the islet.

Holocaust
A commemoration celebrated on June 7 in memory of the massacre of the island's inhabitants by the Turks and the fire that completely destroyed its territory. On this occasion, many islanders, especially those who emigrated to the United States, return to Kassos.

Festival of Aghia Marina
A religious festival held on July 17, during which the islanders dance in their beautiful traditional costumes.
