Leros is still a little-touristed island, quiet, and rich in the authentic atmosphere of old Greece. It is ideal for a restful vacation in contact with nature and traditions. The main things to see and do on the island are listed below.
Aghia Marina, Platanos, Panteli
These three villages actually form a single town with very varied architecture.
Aghia Marina is the second port of the island and has an archaeological museum.
Platanos is located at the foot of the large castle and gets its name from a large plane tree in the center of the main square. Panteli is located at the innermost point of the bay and has a sandy beach.
Byzantine Castle and Windmills
An impressive and panoramic castle located on top of a hill, reachable from Platanos even on foot via a long staircase. Along the climb, the beautiful windmills, offering panoramic views, are worth a stop. The castle was built on top of the ancient acropolis and was inhabited until the 1700s. It served as a refuge for the population (who lived just outside the walls) when pirates arrived from the sea. Inside there is an ecclesiastical museum and a monastery with beautiful frescoes and a legendary and miraculous icon of the Madonna.
Belenis Museum
Located inside the beautiful Belenis castle, near Alinda, it is an interesting historical and folklore museum.
Military and War Museum "Merikia Tunnel"
An interesting and evocative museum located in some galleries built by the Italian army just outside Lakki, towards the west.
Lakki
Entirely built by the Italians when its port became a military naval base, it has many buildings reminiscent of fascist-era architecture: square, simple, and functional. There are also military structures that later housed the island's infamous psychiatric hospital. The whole area is a well-preserved corner of history.
Aghios Isidoros
A picturesque small church built on a rocky islet connected to Leros by a cement path that is almost submerged at high tide. From the islet, you can see the remains of an ancient temple at the bottom of the sea. It's a good place to admire the sunset.
Panaghia Kavouradena
A beautiful small church built into a rock cavity near the sea, near Xerokambos. According to legend, the icon of the Madonna displayed inside was found by a crab fisherman. To reach it, you descend a long and steep staircase.
Agia Marina Windmill
A picturesque windmill located practically in the sea.
Carnival
Celebrated wildly in honor of Bacchus.
Alidia Festivals
Cultural, sporting, and artistic events that take place on the beach of Alidia during the first two weeks of August.
