The island of Kefalonia is very diverse, offering many attractions for tourists. Below are the most characteristic ones.
Argostoli
The capital of the island, almost entirely destroyed by the 1953 earthquake, offers visitors the beautiful bridge with characteristic arches, the Archaeological Museum, the Korgialenia Library, and the Korgialenio Historical and Folklore Museum.
Ancient Krani
Remains of the walls of the ancient city (circa 6th century BC), three kilometers east of the capital.
Aghios Georgios Castle
Located to the south near Peratata, it offers a splendid view.
Fiskardo
Located to the north, very close to Ithaca, it is a beautiful fishing village that has retained its traditional characteristics as it was not destroyed by the earthquake.
Katavothres
North of Argostoli on the Lassi peninsula, there is a lagoon connected to the sea via a channel through which seawater continuously flows, seemingly swallowed by the island only to reappear in the Gulf of Sami.
The little snakes of Markopoulos
Approximately between August 6 and 15, in the village of Markopoulos, a large number of harmless small snakes suddenly appear in front of the Church of the Madonna. After the Assumption festival, they suddenly disappear. Another peculiarity of these snakes is that they have a cross on their heads.
Special goats
On this island, there is a variety of goats that can go without drinking for six months and, due to the minerals in the soil, have "golden" teeth.
Pyrghi
Beautiful mountain locality.
Kounopetra
A large rock rising from the sea that used to have a constant undulating movement, unfortunately stopped by the 1953 earthquake.
Droggoratis Cave
Beautiful 300-meter cave with stalactites and stalagmites, near Sami.
Melissani Lake and Cave
Also near Sami, there is this "chasm cave" with a lake inside. Since the vault of the cave collapsed, the sunlight gives the lake's waters magnificent colors that change throughout the day. The cave and lake tour is organized with small boats.
Myrtos Gulf
Just south of Assos, viewed from above, it offers one of the most beautiful sights in Greece, thanks to its turquoise waters due to the presence of rocks with pearly reflections and containing talc.
Mount Enos
Climbing Mount Enos, the highest on the island (1626 meters), on a clear day offers a panorama that embraces all the islands of the archipelago.
Carnival Celebrations
For those on the island during the carnival period, the festivals in the villages of Frankata and Valsamata (in the inland of Argostoli) are noteworthy.
Festivals
There are many village festivals on the island that entertain the population, such as those in honor of the island's protector, Aghios Gerasimos, on August 15 and October 20. In honor of Aghia Anna, on July 25 in Lakithira (south of Argostoli).
