As in all Greek islands, the main vacation accommodations are studios, which are small apartments (often one-room or two-room units) equipped with a kitchenette, bedroom, and bathroom. These are usually family-run and often reasonably priced. The owners of the studios are generally very helpful and friendly, as are the island's inhabitants, providing an economical yet suitable accommodation for a typical vacation on a Greek island.

The island of Kefalonia is not excessively touristy, but you can still find every type of accommodation in hotel s, residences, and tourist villages. There are also at least two campgrounds: one in Sami and one in Argostoli.

The island is large, so if you intend to visit it all, it is best to choose accommodation in a central location to avoid spending half your vacation traveling. There are many seaside areas with beautiful beaches and clear sea. In the south and on the west coast, there are sandy beaches more suitable for children, while on the east coast, there are picturesque pebbly coves. The places with the most accommodation options are: Argostoli, Lixouri, Fiskardo, Skala, Svoronata, Sami, Aghia Efimia, Lassi, and Poros.

Argostoli

The capital, as often happens, is the right place to stay if you want to have all services at your fingertips and, particularly in Kefalonia, if you want to be centrally located to visit the entire island. Almost completely destroyed by the 1953 earthquake, Argostoli is a modern town with a pleasant seafront but lacks its own beach for daytime relaxation. It has a strategic position for excursions and is lively in the evening, but it is not suitable for those who love an easy beach life right next to the hotel.

Lixouri

The second largest city on the island, like Argostoli, offers many accommodation options and services in general. Like Argostoli, it does not have its own beach and was completely rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake. It is certainly in a less convenient location for visiting Kefalonia, but it can be a good solution if you are looking for quiet, unorganized beaches with the distinctive feature of having reddish sand. The island's capital is easily reachable by a ferry that arrives in about 20 minutes.

Fiskardo

Located to the north facing Ithaca, it is a beautiful fishing village that, not having been destroyed by the earthquake, has maintained its traditional appearance. Over time, it has become fashionable and a destination for "chic" tourism that does not worry about the cost. Its beaches have a very colorful sea. Being located at the far north of the island, it is not suitable as a base camp for visiting all of Kefalonia, but it is certainly perfect for at least one excursion to Ithaca.

Skala

Located at the southernmost point of Kefalonia, it is an ideal destination for those who love to be surrounded by sand, sea, and little else. The beach life here is fantastic and far from everything. If feeling a bit isolated is not a problem and you don't want to explore the island, this place is excellent. The accommodation options are plentiful.

Svoronata

Staying in Svoronata, which offers many options, can also be a good idea if you intend to visit all of Kefalonia. The place, hardly damaged by the 1953 earthquake, is central and very peaceful: perfect for families.

Sami

The beautiful Sami, with its port, is centrally located for both visiting the island and taking an excursion to Ithaca. It offers excellent accommodations and is near the splendid Antisami beach. Nothing is missing here for a great vacation in Kefalonia.

Aghia Efimia

A very beautiful, quiet, and central village with lovely coves nearby, convenient for reaching the most famous beaches on the island. The only drawback: it is quite popular, so it's best to book in advance.

Lassi

Close to the capital, central, and easily accessible from both the port and the airport, it has beautiful beaches and many services for tourists. This is a highly sought-after area: book in advance.

Poros

A small village with a beautiful sea, plenty of greenery, and an equipped port. For those who prefer pebbles over sand and do not enjoy evening entertainment, it is a perfect place. Not highly recommended for those who want to visit the entire island because it is a bit off-center.
