The island of Lefkada boasts a beautiful sea, sandy beaches, protected bays with still waters, a swampy channel only 30 meters wide that separates it from the mainland, cliffs and lush valleys, not to mention mountains and picturesque villages. Below is a list of some of the main attractions.
Lefkada
It is the capital of the island and is located near the bridge that connects it to the mainland. The city was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, but fortunately, its most important baroque churches were not destroyed. There are several museums in the city, but the most characteristic and unique one in Greece is the Phonograph Museum.
Nidri
It is not the capital of the island, but it is certainly the busiest and most lively town. Tourist boats depart from here to tour the island or visit the verdant islets opposite: Meganissi, Skorpios (owned by the Onassis family), Sparti, and Madouri (where the poet Valaoritis was born).
Lefkada Leap
This is the place where, according to legend, the poet Sappho, rejected by her great love Phaon, threw herself from a height of 70 meters and died in the sea. The place is still very popular because it is believed to cure the woes of love. Marked by a lighthouse, from here you can admire the Ionian Sea crashing loudly below from a dizzying height. According to tradition, condemned prisoners were also thrown from this rock, and if they survived, they were spared.
Windmills
Located on the narrow strip of beach surrounding the lagoon in front of the town of Lefkada. The windmills are no longer operational, but the area is notable for the presence of large sand dunes piled up by the wind and the absence of tourists.
Archaeological Sites
The main archaeological sites on the island are found in the capital, at Ellomenos, Apollonio, and Kalamos.
Festival of Agios Spyridon
Celebrated in the beautiful mountain village of Karies, it begins on August 11 and lasts for two days, enlivened by traditional music, women in traditional costumes, and the sale of lace and embroidery.
Trip to Papanikolis Cave
Located on the islet of Meganissi, the largest of the islands around Lefkada, it is a large sea cave where a submarine took refuge during World War II.
