You might choose to vacation in Skyros especially if you are looking for a tranquil island with wild nature, characteristic villages, a population that still lives by old traditions, and beautiful sea. Below is a list of the main things worth seeing.
La Chora
The capital is located on the opposite side of the port Linaria and is arranged amphitheatrically on a hill overlooking the sea, right next to an enormous dark rock on which the ancient castle stands. The houses are very white, square-shaped, and built very close to each other. It is worth seeing at least one inside because they are decorated according to the local traditional art: carved furniture, beautiful ceramics, and embroidered fabrics. La Chora is very panoramic, and to enjoy the best view, you should go to the large Eleftherias square at the north end of the village. In La Chora, you can visit two museums: the archaeological one and the folklore one.
Kastro
The castle originated as an acropolis in the 4th century BC and includes the monastery of Agios Georgios, from which you have a stunning view of La Chora.
Pefkos
A very picturesque village sheltered from the winds.
Palamari
An archaeological site with evidence from the Bronze Age.
Tomb of Rupert Brooke
It is located in the area called Treis Boukes, in the south of the island, where the English poet who lived on the island and dedicated several poems to it used to go.
Festivals
In Skyros, festivals are very significant and still maintain the ancient traditions of the population. Among the most characteristic are, for example, Carnival, Ash Monday, and weddings, which are usually celebrated in August. If you are on the island during one of these occasions, you must absolutely see them.
Craftsmanship
Among the things to see are definitely the products of the renowned local craftsmanship: the embroideries, ceramics, and carved wood.
