Patmos (from Greek Πάτμος), is an island in the Dodecanese located between Ikaria and Leros. It can only be reached by sea, particularly from Piraeus (156 nautical miles) and from other islands in the Dodecanese (such as Leros, Lipsi, and Kos).

It has an area of 34 km² and a population of about 2,500 inhabitants.

The island, of volcanic origin, consists of low dark rock reliefs, the highest of which reaches 269 meters (Profitis Elias). Its barren and rocky coasts are very jagged, with many islets but also beautiful beaches and a scenic landscape rich in stone outcrops. Fertile areas are cultivated with orchards, olive groves, vineyards, and vegetable gardens. The island's resources are essentially agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Among the typical local products are souvenirs of St. John, religious icons, embroidered fabrics, as well as cheeses and sweets.

The capital of the island is Skala, where the main port is also located.

The sea of Patmos is very clear, and its beaches are both sandy and pebbly or rocky.

In ancient times, the island was a place of exile and became famous because St. John the Evangelist was confined there in an attempt to limit the spread of Christianity. Inside a cave overlooking the sea, St. John dictated the Apocalypse to one of his disciples. Even today, it is a destination for many pilgrimages, but in addition to the faithful, the island, thanks to its sea and the charm of its Chora, is also frequented by international tourism. Among all the islands of the Dodecanese, it is the most fashionable and frequented by the jet-set, as well as a destination for cruises in the Aegean.

The road network is good, with paved roads (with many ups and downs) reaching the main locations and beaches. To get around the island, there is a bus service that connects the port with Chora and the main beaches. There is also a good taxi service, as well as the possibility to rent cars or scooters.
