Symi (from the Greek Σύμη) is an island in the Dodecanese located northwest of Rhodes and very close to the Turkish coast. It can only be reached by sea, for example from the Greek port of Piraeus (230 nautical miles), from Rhodes (21 nautical miles), from Tilos (30 nautical miles), or from Kos.

It has an area of 58 km² and a population of about 2,500 inhabitants.

The island, enclosed between two Turkish peninsulas, is arid, rocky, and has rugged coasts with several small surrounding islets. The very sparse vegetation consists mainly of pines, mulberries, and fruit trees, mostly extending in the center-south of the island. The climate is particularly warm, making it suitable for visiting in spring and autumn. Unfortunately, water is scarce on the island and has to be brought in by tanker ships.

The inhabitants primarily engage in fishing and tourism, having almost abandoned sponge collecting. In the past, they were also famous for building fast sailing ships and were very active in maritime trade.

Until the early 20th century, Symi was the capital of the Dodecanese and had about 30,000 inhabitants. The islanders have always been known as a courageous people; they were the first to rebel against Turkish rule.

Local craftsmanship particularly involves the creation of ship models.

The island's capital is Ano Symi (Chorio), just above the main port, Kato Symi (Gialos). Symi is largely visited by day-trippers from Rhodes to see the unique architecture of the villages, but it also attracts wealthy tourists as the port often hosts luxury yachts.

A single paved but somewhat winding road connects the main locations on the island. There is a minibus service as well as taxis and car or scooter rentals. To reach the more remote beaches, it is better to use taxi boats rather than venture along trails and dirt roads (which are much loved by motocross enthusiasts).
