What to see in Symi?

Symi is a very picturesque island where both wild nature and architecture take center stage. The main things to see and do are listed below.

Ano Symi (Chorio)
A charming town situated on a hill. Many stately homes belonging to shipowners from the island's prosperous period can be admired (often uninhabited). They are very colorful and rich in friezes, balconies, columns, and pediments with an architectural style of the Italian school. The view of Ano Symi from the sea is truly impressive. Be sure to visit the Archaeological and Folklore Museum in a neoclassical palace, which features a collection of ancient artifacts and an area dedicated to sponge fishing. Several windmills adorn the landscape.

Kastro
The Castle of the Knights of St. John is located above Ano Symi and, along with the stone church of Kira Panaghia, offers a very panoramic view of the capital and the port.

Kato Symi (Gialos)
A port nestled between two inlets, very lively and much frequented. Like Ano Symi, it consists of old villas with neoclassical architectural style, very colorful houses, and beautiful pavements of white and black pebbles. Be sure to see the Clock Tower and the Nautical Museum.

Monastery of Panormitis
Located in a picturesque and very remote place, it hosts important pilgrimages in honor of the island's patron saint (Archangel Michael), protector of sailors. It can be reached by a paved road (also by bus) that, starting from the port, passes through a beautiful forest of cypresses, olive trees, and Mediterranean scrub. It is the second monastery of the Dodecanese, after the one in Patmos, all in Venetian style with beautiful frescoes, a rich iconostasis, and two interesting museums inside.

Monastery of Kyra
Situated in the mountains in a very panoramic area.

Pedi
A small fishing village in a beautiful bay. Be sure to see the church of Agios Georgios.

Walks
For those who love walking, there are many possible excursions leading to various bays or to the small churches scattered all over.

Seskli, Nimos, and Agia Marina
Deserted islets, rich in fish, and with beautiful crystal-clear seas suitable for snorkeling. Excellent destinations for a boat trip.

Symi Festival
Held over the three summer months (July, August, and September) and is very popular with both locals and tourists. It features concerts, theatrical performances, film screenings, art exhibitions, and conferences.

Feast of the Savior
Held on August 6, characterized by a large banquet with cod as the main dish.

Panormitis Monastery Fair
Held on November 8, it attracts pilgrims from all over the Dodecanese to the island.
