Ikaria (from the Greek Ικαρία), also known as Icaria or Nicaria, is located in the northern Aegean Sea, southwest of Samos (10 nautical miles), and derives its name from Icarus, who, according to legend, fell into the sea right in front of the island. It can be reached both by sea and by air (Ikaria National Airport). The island is 144 nautical miles from Piraeus.

Ikaria has an area of 254 km² and approximately 8500 inhabitants.

The interior is dominated by two mountains and is rich in vegetation, including olive trees and pines. The southern part of the island consists of steep, barren cliffs, while the northern part has beautiful coasts and fertile land; for this reason, the southern part lacks roads and is almost uninhabited, unlike the northern part. At its highest point, Ikaria reaches 1000 meters above sea level (Mount Etheras).

Among its products, fruits stand out, both fresh and dried (especially walnuts), and strawberry tree and heather honey. Ikaria is not very touristy: its main attractions are tranquility and the complete absence of hectic rhythms. Interestingly, its inhabitants are very long-lived: the average life expectancy on the island exceeds 90 years.

The capital is Aghios Kirikos, where the main port is also located.

Its road network is good only in the northern part; in the south, the roads are unpaved and sometimes difficult. On the island, there is both a bus service (which leads with scenic routes to the main towns and beaches) and taxis and several car and scooter rental agencies.
